How to Use This Calculator
Adjust age, financial profile, contributions, growth assumptions, and retirement spending by using the sliders, input boxes, and buttons. All calculations update instantly as you adjust the values.
- Current Age: Your current age in years.
- Retirement Age: The target age when you plan to stop working and begin drawing down from your portfolio.
- Current Savings: The total amount of retirement savings you have accumulated to date across all accounts (401k, IRA, taxable investments).
- Annual Pre-tax Salary: Your annual gross earnings prior to taxes and deductions.
- Annual Contribution: The yearly contribution made toward retirement.
- Return before retirement: The anticipated average annual nominal return rate earned on investments while accumulating wealth.
- Return After Retirement: The estimated nominal investment return rate during retirement, usually lower to account for a safer allocation.
- Expected Inflation: The average expected annual inflation rate, used to adjust future spending needs and drawdowns.
- Annual Income Increase: The expected percentage by which your annual salary grows by each year.
- Annual Withdrawal Amount: The desired income amount you plan to withdraw annually from your savings in retirement.
- Other Annual Income: Supplemental income streams expected during retirement, such as Social Security, pensions, or rental income.
After entering your details, you can immediately review your general retirement information, total balance breakdown, balance over time chart, and a complete amortization schedule.
Understanding Your Results
Your results are organized into four key sections: core summary metrics, a total balance breakdown, a visual balance over time chart, and a full amortization schedule.
- Balance at Retirement: The total dollar balance accumulated in your portfolio at the exact moment you reach your retirement age.
- Funds Last Until: The projected age when your portfolio balance will run out, factoring in withdrawals, compounding growth, supplemental income, and inflation.
- Growth Multiple: The ratio comparing your final total balance against the total money you personally deposited (Ending Balance ÷ Total Contributions).
- Retire in: The total number of years remaining between your current age and target retirement age.
- Total Growth: Total dollar yield earned purely from compound interest throughout the accumulation phase.
- Total Contributions: The sum of your current savings plus all recurring contributions made up to your retirement age.
- Retired Monthly Pay: Your total expected monthly income during retirement (Annual Withdrawal + Other Income divided by 12).
- Total Balance Breakdown: A visual percentage breakdown displaying how much of your total retirement balance consists of current savings, future contributions, and cumulative investment growth.
- Balance Over Time: A visual timeline charting your total portfolio balance year-by-year from your current age until your funds run out or reach age 120.
- Amortization Schedule: A detailed breakdown tracking year, age, total contributions, total interest growth, and end-of-year balances.
How Each Value is Calculated
Projections are evaluated annually using standard compound interest logic divided into two distinct phase calculations.
1. Pre-Retirement Accumulation Phase:
Balancet+1 = [Balancet× (1 + rbefore)] + [C0 × (1 + g)t]
Where C0 is your initial annual contribution, g is your annual salary increase rate, rbefore is pre-retirement return rate, and t is elapsed working years.
2. Post-Retirement Drawdown Phase
Initial Drawdown = (Withdrawal − Other Income) × (1 + i)k
Each year in retirement, your remaining balance compounds at the post-retirement return rate (rafter) before subtracting the inflation-adjusted drawdown for that year:
Balancey+1 = [Balancey× (1 + rafter)] − [Initial Drawdown × (1 + i)y]
Where rafter is the post-retirement return rate, i is the expected annual inflation rate, k is the total working years until retirement, and y is the elapsed years spent in retirement.
- Balance at Retirement: Calculated using the first formula above.
- Funds Last Until: Calculated using the second formulas above.
- Retire in: Retirement Age − Current Age
- Total Growth: Balance at Retirement − Total Cumulative Contributions
- Total Contributions: Balance at Retirement − Total Cumulative Contributions
- Retired Monthly Pay: (Annual Withdrawal Amount + Other Annual Income) ÷ 12
